Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are composed of on-the-job training and classroom-related instruction designed to provide students with knowledge of theoretical and technical aspects of their craft. Total completion of these programs can take up to 5 years, depending upon the craft.
Applied Technology Certificate Program
Technical education encompasses a variety of programs designed to equip students with career and life skills. These programs are competency based education and training programs that may be long term, short term, apprenticeship, or custom designed for individual employer needs. Many of the programs are offered in an open-entry/open-exit format providing flexibility for students and employers, and allowing high school and adult students to master required skills at their personal learning pace.
Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
AAS degrees are programs of study intended to prepare students for entry-level careers, and the degree awarded is normally in a special program area, e.g. Associate of Applied Science in Accounting or Associate of Applied Science in Welding. Generally, general education requirements are less extensive than in AA or AS degrees. Many of the courses in AAS degrees will transfer to other institutions.
These programs are intended to encourage exploration of academic options, provide a strong general education component, and prepare students to initiate upper-division work in bachelor’s programs or prepare for employment.
Four-year colleges and universities award this degree after students have accumulated a certain number of undergraduate credits. Usually the Bachelor’s degree takes four years to earn, and is a pre-requisite for studies in a graduate program. There are different types of bachelor’s degrees, such as a B.A. (bachelor of arts), B.S. (bachelor of science), and B.F.A. (bachelor of fine arts). Each college makes its own determination about the type of bachelor’s degrees it offers, and the qualifications necessary for receiving one or the other.
Only students who have completed a bachlor’s degree can complete post-bachelor, or graduate, degrees. Graduate courses involve more advanced study in the area of the undergraduate students degree, or may involve study in another area, and prepare students for employment in certain fields, e.g. journalism, social work, teaching, law. Graduate programs may include master’s degrees, postgraduate certificates and diplomas, and doctorates.
