Financial Aid Options — Work Study

There are still some who believe the myth that working and studying do not mix. The fact is, however, students who work moderate numbers of hours can successfully handle challenging course loads at the same time. By working part-time you may be able to avoid excessive borrowing and still complete your degree in a reasonable number of terms. There is, however, a point beyond which it may be better to balance work with a responsible amount of student loans. By investing in reasonable student loan debt, you can preserve enough time to concentrate on your studies and graduate in less time.

Federal Work Study and UCOPE Work Study
Work study is a program that helps fund the wages of students who work for schools and affiliated organizations. Work study funds are limited, so be sure to apply early. Similar to applying for a grant, all applicants for work study must file the FAFSA.

Cooperative Education
If you are fortunate, you may be able to get paid and receive credit toward graduation for the same job. Other jobs may provide limited or no pay, but will provide credit toward graduation and valuable experience that may help you get a better job after graduation. Check with the cooperative education office or financial aid office at the college or university you want to attend for more details.

Student Employment
Even if you do not qualify for work study, your school may be able to help you find a job either on or off campus. Most colleges and universities post job opportunities in either a career center or financial aid office. Some schools post jobs on-line. Check the school's Financial Aid office for further information.

The Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority offers a very high level of local service to parents and borrowers.
