Why are loans being sold to the U.S. Department of Education?

Because of changes enacted by Congress, all student loans made after July 1, 2008 must be sold to the U.S. Department of Education.  This is a potentially confusing and frustrating situation and we at UHEAA pledge to do all we can to help you manage all your student loans.  We sent letters to all the affected borrowers showing which loans were sold (and which weren’t, in some cases).

If your loans have been sold, please read on – many of the most commonly asked questions may be answered below.  (Click on a subject to read more.)

How will I know if my loans were sold?

If none of your loans were disbursed after July 1, 2008, you won’t be affected.

If you do have loans first disbursed after July 1, 2008 and fully disbursed prior to July 1, 2009, you were notified by a letter from us. (Please remember to keep us updated with your address and phone number.)

Who will take care of my loans after they’ve been sold?

The administrator of the U.S. Department of Education’s loans is FedLoan Servicing.  If your loans have been sold, you will soon receive a letter from FedLoan Servicing letting you know whom to contact if you have questions. That letter will also tell you where to send payments and any other correspondence pertaining to the transferred loans.

For your convenience, here is the contact information for FedLoan Servicing:

Could I end up with loans at UHEAA and FedLoan Servicing?

Yes.  Since loans made before July 1, 2008 are not being sold to the Department, they will remain at UHEAA.  If you have loans made before and after July 1, 2008, you need to keep in close contact with both UHEAA and FedLoan Servicing.  For example:

When…        Then…

you change your phone number, e-mail, or address…

…you must notify both UHEAA and FedLoan Serving.

you send a payment…

…you must make sure the payment is sent to the correct address.  All payments received by UHEAA will be applied to the UHEAA-held loans. All payments received by FedLoan Servicing will be applied to loans held by the Department of Education.

Note: if your payments to UHEAA are currently being paid through the automatic payment program, your payment amount will be adjusted.

you submit documents:

…you must send these documents to UHEAA, FedLoan Servicing, or both, depending on which loans you want to be affected by the options or services you are requesting.

you are having problems making your payments…

…you must contact both UHEAA and FedLoan Servicing as options may be available for you.
