As a service to its participating schools and lenders, Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority offers the following review of recent announcements and releases from the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid, and related sources. These reminders cover topics of general interest and importance that relate to the administration of federal student aid.

Summary: Federal Student Aid (FSA) announced a series of instructor-led, online training sessions on changes to the Pell Grant and TEACH Grant programs made by the HEOA and changes to the ACG and National SMART Grant programs made by the ECASLA. Advance registration is required.

Summary: FSA announced changes to the login process for the FAA Access to CPS Online and Student Aid Internet Gateway (SAIG) Enrollment Web sites. Users have until Friday, May 15, 2009, to register for the new FSA User ID.

Summary: Maximum 2009-2010 award amounts for the Academic Competitiveness Grant and National SMART Grant programs were announced. Additionally, noted were changes in the statute allowing students enrolled in the 5th year of an undergraduate 5-year program to receive a National SMART Grant award, and permitting students enrolled at least half-time to receive ACG and SMART Grant awards.

Summary: FSA announced the release of a new booklet, Your Federal Student Loans: Learn the Basics and Manage Your Debt. For students considering or receiving federal student loans, it covers what types of federal student loans are available, the difference between private and federal student loans, how much to borrow, tips on repaying loans, consequences of default, and other helpful hints.

Campus-Based Awards

Date: April 30, 2009
Summary: Federal Student Aid posted the awards for the Federal Work-Study (FWS), Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), and Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) programs for the 2009-2010 Award Year. All schools receiving Campus-Based funds are listed by state with the dollar amount authorized in each program.
