FSA Provides Information Regarding Secondary Confirmation and the G-845 Form

Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority notes Federal Student Aid’s posting of important information addressing the Secondary Confirmation process and the G-845 form. The G-845 is an Immigration Status/Document Verification Request.

When a financial aid applicant completes a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), FSA conducts a match of data with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to confirm the student’s eligible noncitizen status. When DHS is unable to verify the applicant’s status through the automated process, the school must perform manual secondary confirmation. A G-845 form must be submitted to DHS with copies of the applicant’s DHS documentation.

Schools are instructed to continue to use the current G-845 form found in Volume I, Chapter 2 of the 2008-2009 Federal Student Aid Handbook, despite the 6/30/2008 expiration date. However for the G-845 to be processed, a 15-digit DHS Verification Number must be accurately entered on page 1, Section A, line #5 of the form.

FSA’s Electronic Announcement about Secondary Confirmation and the G-845 form can be accessed at: http://ifap.ed.gov/eannouncements/030609DHSG845ProcessIssue.html
