NSLDS Student Transfer Monitoring Process

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently released Dear Partner Letter GEN-01-09 as a reminder that, effective July 1, 2001, schools are no longer required to obtain a paper Financial Aid Transcript (FAT), or respond to another school's request for a FAT for any transfer student, including mid-year transfers (see UHEAA Bulletin Volume 2000 – Issue 67.) Instead, under a new process described in a separate attachment to this Dear Partner Letter, the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) will provide financial aid history information for mid-year transfer students directly to schools that request it.

The attachment to Dear Partner Letter GEN-01-09 provides additional and detailed information about the revised regulatory requirement for obtaining financial aid history information for transfer students. It also contains a full discussion of the new "Inform, Monitor, Alert" process that schools will use with NSLDS to implement the new requirements. To begin using the new process, schools must set-up a Transfer Monitoring profile with NSLDS. The profile will tell NSLDS which of the options schools wish to choose for both the "Inform" and "Alert" features of the new system, as discussed fully in the attachment.

If you have any questions concerning the New Transfer Monitoring Process, please contact the NSLDS Customer Service Center at 1-800-999-8219, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. E.T. Or, schools may e-mail questions to nsldscoe@raytheon.com. A copy of this Dear Partner Letter is available on ED's web site at http://www.ifap.ed.gov/IFAPWebApp/index.jsp. If you are unable to access ED's web site and would like a hard copy, please contact Stacey Fabros at (801) 321-7211. Any questions regarding this Bulletin should be directed to the UHEAA Policy and Training Department at (801) 321-7166 or by e-mail at cjudd@utahsbr.edu.
