As you know, the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority (UHEAA) recently issued the latest updates to the Common Manual (see UHEAA Bulletin Volume 2000 - Issue 68). These updates included changes to Chapter 8 of the Common Manual, which deleted references to the July 23, 1992 date as it relates to the death of a student for whom a parent obtained a PLUS loan. PLUS loan borrowers who previously were not eligible for discharge due to the fact that the student for whom they obtained the PLUS loan died prior to July 23, 1992, may now be eligible for discharge of their loan. UHEAA is implementing this new policy immediately. Lenders are not required, but may choose to, research their records for PLUS loan borrowers that may now qualify for discharge under this revised provision.
